Kaitlin Barnett, LCSW, provides individual, couples and family therapy to children, adolescents and adults, with a special interest in the young adult population. Kaitlin’s clinical interests include OCD, ADHD, chronic pain and chronic illness, mental health in LGBTQ+ populations, perinatal mental health, transitions to adulthood, as well as trauma and the intergenerational transmission of trauma. She employs an array of therapeutic modalities tailored to each client. These include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Insight-oriented therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD, social anxiety and phobias, trauma processing, executive functioning skill building and communication skill building, parent support and education, play therapy, as well as attachment-based and family systems approaches. She also uses mind-body practices, such as mindfulness, polyvagal techniques, yoga and other specialized breathing, as well as visualizations and meditation. She sometimes teaches knitting to aid in mindfulness and in coping with chronic pain. Kaitlin can also incorporate a Jewish perspective into counseling if requested.
Kaitlin received her MSW from SUNY-Albany and completed clinical training at the Albany Medical Center Department of Psychiatry’s outpatient Medicaid clinic, and at Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Before joining Northpointe, she provided therapy to adolescents and adults at Psychology Wellness Practice in Albany.
Before becoming a psychotherapist, Kaitlin wrote about mental health as a journalist and nonfiction author. Her book, Dosed: The Medication Generation Grows Up, chronicled how taking psychiatric medication from a young age impacts young people’s development and sense of self. Dosed was called a must-read by the American Psychological Association’s book review and the Pew Research Center’s Prescription Project. Kaitlin has written for numerous other publications, both locally and nationally and for several years had a blog at PsychCentral.com. Kaitlin also holds a Master of Science from Columbia Journalism School. She graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College, where she served as executive editor of the daily newspaper, studied abroad in Paris, and majored in history.
